The Secretarybird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is a very large, mostly terrestrial bird of prey. Endemic to Africa, the secretary bird is susually found in the open grasslands and savannah of the sub-Saharan region. They spend most of their time walking the grassland in search of prey and are known for hunting and eating snakes. Largely terrestrial, secretary birds can walk up to 20 miles in a day in search of their prey, which includes, in addition to snakes, tortoises, amphibians, small mammals and young game birds.

Secretarybirds are vulnerable according to the IUCN. They can be found in the fossil record dating back at least 25 million years.

What will this project support?

The money raised will support a research project by Sidney Shema, EDGE Fellowship applicant, on secretarybirds in Kenya.

It is unknown whether or not Secretarybirds are truly nomadic, and this project aims to improve our understanding of the foraging movements of Secretarybirds in Kenya.

This fundraiser will contribute to a research project which will cost roughly $25,000. These funds will be used to for GPS transmitters, vehicle rental, or bird banding/ringing supplies.

This fundraiser is being coordinated by the Raptor Taxon Advisory Group's Secretarybird SSP (Species Survival Plan) Program, of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
